Leicester Royal Infirmary

Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) is the biggest of Leicester’s three hospitals and is the teaching hospital within the Trust.

It has 890 beds and provides Leicestershire’s only accident and emergency service. The Anaesthetic Department at LRI provides Anaesthetic services for all surgical specialities except neurosurgery and cardio-thoracic surgery.

The department has 62 consultants and 5 associate specialists.

Our main operation area is based on the second floor of the Balmoral building and it is called the Central Operating Department (COD). It has 17 operating theatres and the anaesthetics department is also located here.  There are also separate eye theatres, an assisted conception unit and an MRI suite.

We are the tertiary referral centre for paediatric surgery, major maxillofacial and ENT surgery, major plastic surgery, upper GI and bariatric surgery, vascular surgery, as well as providing anaesthesia for day-case surgery, opthalmology, trauma including NOF fracture, and diagnostic interventions in radiology.  In addition we have a tertiary maternity unit with a CNST 1 rating providing care for 7000 deliveries per year and a 22-bedded ITU for surgical and medical patients, taking referrals from one of the busiest A&E departments in the country. Other services include an in-patient pain service, including acute and chronic pain management.

We also run specialist pre-assessment clinics for Vascular, Upper GI, Colorectal, ENT/ Maxillo-facial, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Eyes, including CPEX testing. We also run an ITU follow-up clinic.

This offers us a unique and comprehensive opportunity to provide anaesthetic training across various sub-specialties.

We also run at variety of teaching programmes in addition to those provided by EMSA.  We have Friday afternoon teaching within the department, weekly evening sessions for trainees and consultants on hot topics, and for journal review and M&M, as well as monthly portable “tea trolley” teaching within COD itself.

There are also 4 formal fellowships within UHL – Airway and Paediatrics based at the LRI, the Obstetric and the Regional fellowship at the LRI and LGH.

There is a Postgraduate Medical Education Centre and a comprehensive medical library at both the LRI and LGH.
