The Glenfield Hospital is one of the few centres in the United Kingdom with an established ECMO (Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) programme for both adult and paediatric patients and it is the most successful centre in the world using the ECMO procedures.

It is the sub-regional (Trent) cardiothoracic centre and the third largest unit in the country providing experience in all forms of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery, excluding transplantation. Over 1500 open heart operations were carried out in the last year. 10% of the workload is in Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery (although the location of Children’s Cardiac Services may change in the future as part of NHS Englands review of Congenital Cardiac Surgical Services).

There are many opportunities for anaesthetic trainees to gain their skills and competencies at the three Leicester hospitals which offer a different but interesting mix of patients. There are Postgraduate Centres and libraries on all sites.
